What to sell on Walmart as a new seller

Start with an item you can source, price and deliver reliably. A recommendation is a candidate, not a promise of sales.

Start with your supply, not a bestseller list

An empty catalog makes every popular item look tempting. Your first question is simpler: can you obtain this exact item from a reliable supplier? Confirm the cost, minimum order, lead time and available quantity before buying inventory.

Pick a category you understand. Product dimensions, materials and compatibility should be details you can verify, not descriptions you copy from another listing. Avoid buying an unfamiliar item just because someone calls it a winning product.

Use Assortment Growth to find candidates

Walmart’s Assortment Growth Customer Favorites shows demand-based recommendations from Walmart and the broader market. Walmart says these recommendations refresh monthly. Set your growth strategy, then use search, filters and personalization to narrow the suggestions.

Open View details on a candidate. Read the rationale, performance trends, marketplace metrics and considerations available to your account. Save items that fit your supply; remove ones that do not. Not every recommended item is out of stock on Walmart.

Availability can change. A missing offer does not prove profitable demand, low competition or your right to sell that item. Walmart explicitly says recommendations do not guarantee sales. You remain responsible for sourcing and maintaining inventory.

Run 4 checks before you list

  1. Eligibility

Check applicable category, brand and item requirements. A recommendation does not replace compliance checks or permission requirements.
  2. Sourcing

Confirm legitimate supply, the exact product identifier and a quantity you can replenish. Keep the supplier documentation you need.
  3. Margin

Calculate selling price minus product cost, applicable fees, fulfillment, packing and expected return costs. Use your actual costs, not a revenue estimate.
  4. Delivery

Check packed weight, dimensions, handling time and damage risk. Make only delivery promises you can meet.

If one check fails, skip the item for now. If several candidates pass, start with the one you can verify and fulfill most confidently. You do not need to fill your catalog in one purchase.

Prepare the listing before buying more

Check whether the exact item already exists in Walmart’s catalog. Follow the appropriate item setup process rather than creating a mismatched product. Review identifiers, pack quantity, specifications and images carefully. Walmart holds sellers responsible for accurate information and legal compliance.

Once the listing is live, watch actual orders, returns and stock. Use those results to decide whether to replenish. Neither an out-of-stock signal nor a shortlist can tell you your future profit.
